More on David Kau....
Performing in London at Riverside studios in
Hammersmith, for a total of four weeks [09th March – 6th April]
– as well as at the Stand Up South Africa U.K Comedy festival
where he was well received by the crowd
alongside six other top South African comedians.
While at
the University of Cape Town, he gained his
performers diploma and is still paying off the loans
and fees for his studies. Although now that Diploma
has been upgraded into a
degree …
David was
discovered at the Smirnoff International Comedy
festival at the Baxter theatre in Cape Town, October
1998, this was, believe it or not, the first time he
had ever performed as a stand-up
comedian! So its no wonder that out of 44 comedians
at this years festival from around the world – 33
from London, Australia, USA – 11 South African – he
was the only Black! Ever growing, the following year
he was the headliner at the very same comedy festival,
two weeks of which were spent performing at the Playhouse theatre in Durban,
while another two weeks at the Baxter theatre in
Cape Town. David went on to perform at the same
comedy festival four years in a row … perhaps this this year another local
black guy will be performing.
His
first very-own one-man stand-up comedy show was
entitled ‘THE RAINBOW
NATION TOUR’, which took place at the Grahamstown
arts festival in 1999.
After
the success of his
second one-man stand-up comedy show he released INTRODUCING
THE PEOPLE’S COMIC – DAVID KAU, at the Baxter
theatre in Cape Town, June/July 2000. The title was
a take on The People’s player – Hansie Cronje; The
People’s Baas – Eugene Terreblanche; The People’s
Pastor – Allan Boeasak; and of course – The People’s
Poet – Mzwakhe Mbuli. All this making his title very
appropriate at the time.
He
recently performed in, as well as co-produced, the first
stand-up comedy show in SA consisting of only black
comedians – The Smirnorff Comedy Blackout, which ran
at the Globe theatre, Gold Reef City casino from 9th
July – 21st July 2002. Since those days he has performed in
the 5fm Comedy Jam’s in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth,
Durban, and Bloemfontein.

David
comes from the small town of Kroonstad in the Free
State and was born sometime around the 18th April 1978.
As
mentioned before David's
first performance in Johannesburg was at the first
5fm Heavyweight Comedy Jam, Gallagher Estate 24th
July 2000, with an audience of about 3000 people …
0ver 2990 of them White folk!
Although a lot of people think he’s Dadaman, HE IS
NOT! In fact, He was actually Little Brown Kau on the Phat
Joe Live TV show … while it was still on E-tv. While
continuing to work with Phat Joe on The Phat Joe show
which is now on SABC1, until he went to London in
March 2002. Now he just pops in every now and then, for
an interview … or to tell a joke or two.
Oh and
by the way, you
probably think he’s the guy in the Toyota Tazz
commercial, well… HE IS!
